Chapter thirty-two

Maxwell sat in his car having used the showers at his office and changed into his spare shirt and suit. He called the Metropolitan Police Switchboard and asked to be put through to Chief Superintendent Harper. The phone rang three times before it was picked up.

‘Chief Superintendent Harper’s office.’ said a female voice.

‘I’d like to speak to Mr Harper please.’

‘I’m sorry he is unavailable, he is leaving shortly for the weekend, he’ll be back on Monday morning. I can put you through to Superintendent Bilal if you wish?’

‘No, thank you, it’s Mr Harper I need to speak to, it’s regarding his wife.’

‘His wife? Is everything ok?’

‘I really need to speak to him.’

‘One moment please,’ said the female and Maxwell was treated to some awful saxophone music for a few seconds.

‘Harper here, who is this?’

‘DI Maxwell, Counter Terrorism Branch here Mr Harper. I need to speak with you urgently.’

‘What about? Cheryl said it’s about my wife,’ he sounded concerned which pleased Maxwell.

‘Yes, but this is not a conversation for over the phone.’

‘What do you mean, what’s this about DI Maxwell?’ he was sounding angrier now and more than a little on edge.

‘Let’s meet and I’ll be able to explain it all,’ said Maxwell.

‘I’m going to my place in the country for the weekend, I have no time for this.’

‘Are you driving? I can meet you somewhere enroute? Where are you headed?’

‘Sussex if you must know.’

‘Oh lovely, I’ll take as little of your time as possible but I really do need to speak with you urgently.’

‘Very well, I’ll be picking up my clubs from Royal Blackheath at New Eltham, do you know it?’ said Harper after a few seconds of thinking time.

‘I can find it,’ said Maxwell already typing the name into his sat nav.

‘I’ll be there at 4.15, if you are not there to meet me, I will not wait and whatever you want to talk to me about will have to wait until Monday. Four fifteen!’ he said and hung up.

Maxwell set off, he knew the traffic would be busy on a Friday afternoon and he wanted to make sure he found the right spot. Enroute, he called JT, ‘I’m on my way to meet Harper,’ he told him.

‘On your own?’ asked JT.

‘Yes, on my own. I’m meeting him at his golf club.’

‘What’s your plan?’

Maxwell thought for a second, he was winging this but the details he’d heard this morning made him want to see this man face to face. ‘I’m going to tell him I’m investigating links between one of his cops and terrorists and see what he says. He’s bent as hell and I want to look him in the eye.’

‘Ok, keep me informed,’ said JT, ‘we’re doing some planning just now, so come meet us after you’re done and we’ll fill you in.’

‘Will do,’ said Maxwell and disconnected. Next, he phoned Hamilton and told him of his upcoming meeting with Harper.

‘Perhaps you might leave the line open and let me listen in to your conversation?’ suggested Hamilton.
